US House goes Democrat in a big way

Washington DC: The US House goes Democrat by a wide margin and that means California representative Nancy Pelosi will become the first female speaker of the house.

“Tonight is a great victory for the American people. Today the American people voted for change and they voted Democrats to take them in a new direction,” said Pelosi.

In the Senate, still too close to determine the dominant party. Virginia’s senate race could be the deciding factor.

The initial vote tally shows Democrat Jim Webb with a narrow lead over Republican incumbent Senator George Allen, but Allen has not conceded and analysts say it could come down to a recount.

“This has been an interesting election, and the election continues,” said Allen.

In exit polls, voters said four major issues played a role in how they cast their vote – corruption, terrorism, the economy and the war in Iraq.

Senator John Mccain called the election outcome a "wake up call for the republican party".

“We gotta change our practices. Some people think we came to Washington to change government, and government changed us. But we're going to bounce back,” Mccain added.

CNN is still waiting to project the outcome of two pivotal races, the Virginia race which is still too close to call and the Montana senate seat which is leading democrat.
