US inks border mgt pact with Pak

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: The United States has signed a border management pact with Pakistan.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aims at preventing infiltration by the Taliban and al-Qaeda militants through the 286 kilometer long border with Afghanistan.

The two countries signed the $1 million pact as part of a joint plan to boost the capabilities of Pakistan's border security forces.

The agreement calls for raising 50 additional platoons of the Frontier Corps to protect the border and rehabilitate several border outposts in the Frontier Regions.

Last year, the US Embassy had promised to provide infrastructure support worth $2.7 million to Pakistan. A considerable number of vehicles, surveillance equipment and bullet-proof jackets have been handed over to the FC.

The deal follows the Afghan president recently accusing Pakistan of harbouring top Taliban leader Mullah Omar.
