Washington: Dow Jones had its worst fall in history on Monday falling by 800 points as the US House of Representatives shot down the $700-billion financial bailout bill that President George W Bush and lawmakers in both parties had united behind.
There were 205 votes in favour of the bill while 228 were against.
Republicans are blaming Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for what they are calling divisive comments on the floor before the vote.
