Kolkata: In a re-run of the Norway custody battle, US authorities have restricted access of an Indian couple to their one-year-old son. The US authorities took the step after the child allegedly fell from his bed and suffered injury. The child is now in hospital.
The parents say a child protection team has restricted their access to the child, pending an enquiry into the incident. The father, Debashish Saha, hails from Balurghat in West Bengal.
Debasish has been asked to appear before a court in New Jersey on September 14.
The court has also asked him to provide names of relatives who could be given custody of the child pending the enquiry.
The family back here in India fear the child will be taken away to foster care.
"My son and daughter-in-law are not allowed to meet my grandson. How an 11-month-old child will survive only with the care of a nurse or whoever, I don't know. I don't think this is right. I don't think it is justified," said Nirmal Saha, the grandfather of the child.
"I appeal to the Chief Minister (of West Bengal) and the Prime Minister to help us get our grandson back," said grandmother Sona Rani Saha.
