New Delhi: The United States of America is seeking Indian cooperation in countering the Chinese military build-up.
Visiting US Navy Secretary Donald Winter has warned that the lack of clarity about Chinese intentions could have serious consequences.
He shared his concern with India's military leadership.
"While we know what they (China) are doing in terms of significant investments in the development of their naval fleets, we are not sure we really understand why they are doing it. And without that understanding of why they are doing it becomes very difficult for us to know exactly how to interpret it and how to prepare to deal with what ever consequences might come from it," Winter said in New Delhi on Friday.
It is is the first time that the US has so publicly courted a India on dealing with the Chinese.
Winter is on a three-day visit to India and was accorded the ceremonial guard of honour in the capital earlier on Friday.
The US Navy Secretary had visited the Western Naval Command and the Mazgaon shipbuilding yard in Mumbai on Thursday.
