It is raining diseases in Mumbai
Mumbai: With the rains playing havoc many Mumbaikars are calling in sick at work. Hospital OPDs across the city are flooded with patients of viral fever, gastroentritis and other monsoon illnesses.
Says consultant physician, Bombay hospital, Dr Ashish Tiwari, “We have witnessed many cases of gastroentitis over the last week. Even fever cases are common.”
With civic hospitals in the city reporting over 550 cases of gastroenteritis, health authorities are on alert and cases of dengue, malaria and leptospirosis are being closely monitored.
About 27 cases of dengue, 1, 019 cases of malaria and 17 cases of leptospirosis have been reported.
Says executive health officer, Dr J Thanekar, “There is no need for panic. Our teams are taking blood sample and fogging is on.”
Monsoon is also the perfect time for some hot chai and vada pav, but doctors saying eating street food may only worsen things.
“It is the time for bacteria/viruses to breed. One must maintain good hygiene,” says Dr Tiwari.
However, for some these cautionary measures aren't a deterrent.
“Monsoon is somewhat risky but I enjoy the rains and moreover it is enjoyable to eat street food,” says a resident.
Even though the monsoon has just arrived in Mumbai, it is that time of the year again when catching a cold may need the doctor's attention.
