Thrissur: Indian farming is the latest tourist attraction for a group of American students. A group of agriculture students from the Eastern Mennonite University visited the villages in Thrissur, Kerala to learn the traditional techniques of farming.
They said that the traditional farming techniques used in India are eco friendly and can out put to use in the West under their original pattern. The teachers and students got a first hand experience at planting seedlings, ploughing fields using buffalos, and using the traditional water wheel.
“We were offered this chance to come to India. We wanted to know what is farming as an experience over here. I decided to come and we have traveled quite a few villages already. We experienced a lot of city life and country life,” said Teacher, Eastern Mennonite University Taylor.
The visit is likely give a ‘much needed’ boost to the concept of farm tourism in Kerala.
“Its a wonderful feeling. People have been taking good care of us. We experienced the village life and we understand it takes a lot of hard work to grow rice in these fields,” said Prof Kim.
Kerala's farmers are increasingly turning away from paddy cultivation. Visits like these could help in giving a fillip to the state's ailing plantation sector and farmlands.
