US to withdraw 30,000 troops from Iraq by year end

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: US President George W Bush will announce this week that he plans to reduce US troops in Iraq by about 30,000 by next summer.

The announcement came after the US Force Commander in Iraq, General David Petraeus, told Congress that the withdrawal could be achieved without jeopardising the security gains made in the last few months.

He said about 2,000 troops will be pulled out later this month followed by another 3,500 men by the end of the year.

Twenty thousand more would be pulled out in June 2008. That would leave about 130,000 US troops in Iraq.
