New Delhi: At least 48 people have been reported killed and hundreds injured as tornadoes and thunderstorms ravaged the southern United States.
Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi and Alabama were the worst hit.
Several houses are reported to have been destroyed and fires have broken out in some places.
The city of New Orleans and the state of Georgia are also under tornado warning.
The tornadoes were part of a rare spasm of winter weather, reported news
agency Associated Press.
Winter tornadoes are not uncommon. The peak tornado season is late winter through mid-summer, but the storms can happen at any time of the year with the right conditions.
These tornadoes have been the worst in a 24-hour period since May 3, 1999.
Experts think the tornadoes could have been spawned due to the La Niña phenomenon, the counterpart to El Niño.
The La Niña sees changes in weather patterns around the world due to the cooling of the tropical part of the Pacific Ocean.
