Orissa: The Orissa government has requested the Centre to take action against the US based website CafePress.com, selling a range of apparel products which carry religious motifs.
T-shirts, mugs, caps, boxer shorts, trucker hats and even dog clothes and undergarments celebrate faith says the American website CafePress.com. However, people do not wish to see their favourite deity in a thong.
“It is in bad taste and hurt the sentiments of the country. It would only be appropriate to immediately remove it and apologise to the people of this country,” says BB Harichand, Law Minister, Orissa.
Such Jagannath designs are no longer available through the website as a Puri-based religious body took up the matter and the police filed a case under IPC sections 153(A) and 295 (A) for hurting religious sentiments.
“We have taken up the investigation and things would be clear on what action can be taken,” says Asit Panigrahi, SP Puri.
However, the Orissa government is keen that the Centre raises the matter with the US Embassy. It says people should boycott such products or burn such foreign goods learning lessons from the freedom movement. Clearly, just an apology from the website won't do for the people who believe that the website crossed all the limits.
