Delhi Ramleela goes the global way

New Delhi: The nine nights of Navratri are made more colourful by the myriad Ramleelas (plays based on Ramayana) enacted across the country.

And it isn't just Indians who are playing acting the Ramayana. Some foreigners also participate in Ramleelas at the Shriram Bhartiya Kala Kendra Ramleela in New Delhi.

Many Indians would not be able to recite these lines from Ramayana but for Gaura Prema, an American, this comes naturally.

She has been in love with the stories of Lord Ram since her childhood and that's the reason she has come to Delhi - all the way from Vrindavan to take part in the Ramleela.

"I play the part of Mareech, the golden deer. I like the part becuase I have to dodge Sita," says Prema.

Shenoy from Mongolia is also playing the role of a golden deer. She does not understand Hindi language, but Ramleela fascinates her.

"I don't know the stories very well but the role is very exciting," says Shenoy.

Experts feel the trend of foreigners taking part in the Ramleelas is really catching on.

Says Director, Sri Ram Bhartiya Kala Kendra, Shobha Deepak Singh, "There are American, Indonesian, Malaysian, Bangladeshi and Mongolian students who participate in the Ramleela. Since they are learning in our institutions, participating in this event will help us impart them the values and culture of our country."

Stories of Ramayana and Ram bhajans (hymns) have become a popular phenomenon accross the world and now with more and more foreigners taking part age-old Indian epics are going to newer heights.
