Uttar Pradesh CM Akhilesh Yadav meets slain DSP's wife, assures her of CBI probe

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav met slain DSP Zia-ul-Haq's wife Dr Parveen Azad on Monday and assured her of a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Haq's wife had earlier threatened to commit suicide if a CBI probe was not ordered into her husband's murder.

Kunda MLA Kunwar Raghuraj Pratap Singh alias Raja Bhaiya earlier on Monday resigned as Food and Civil Supplies minister after he was booked for conspiracy to murder the DSP in Deoria.

Two key accused in the case including Guddu singh, a close aide of Raja Bhaiya have been arrested while three police personel who deserted the DSP have been suspended. Local residents say that the revolver used to kill Zia-ul-Haq belonged to Raja Bhaiya although the controversial politician has denied that he owns a licensed revolver even though records with CNN-IBN show that he has a licenced firearm in his name but it is not clear if ot is a revolver.

"I'm definitely not guilty. I resigned because I didn't want the party's image to be tarnished. Ninety-two per cent of them from this village voted for us. So all of them belong to us," he told CNN-IBN.

"No. I don't own a licensed revolver. Even if it belonged to someone else, they'd never give their licensed weapon to another person. He wasn't carrying out any investigation against me and he will always be remembered as a good police officer," he added.

Speaking in the UP Assembly Raja Bhaiya called the entire incident a conspiracy and also criticised the police's methods.
