BJP meet in Delhi to elect new Uttarakhand CM

UNI

New Delhi: The BJP on Wednesday began a meeting of its Uttarakhand legislature Party to elect its new leader as Chief Minister Maj Gen (Retd) Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri handed over his resignation to Party Chief Rajnath Singh on Tuesday.

While accepting the resignation, the party had announced the MLAs would meet here to consider a successor to Khanduri.

The front-runners for the job are State Tourism Minister Prakash Pant and State Health Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank'.

The pressure on Mr Khanduri to quit mounted after BJP's rout in the recent Lok Sabha election in his state where the party lost all the five seats.

Khanduri told mediapersons on Tuesday he had first offered to resign on May 19 after the Lok Sabha election results owning 'moral responsibility' for the party's defeat.

The decision to go for a change in leadership was taken at a core committee meeting held at senior leader L K Advani's residence on Monday in the presence of party President Rajnath Singh.

Khanduri was facing dissidence from the camp led by former chief minister Bhagat Singh Koshiyari.
