Uttarakhand flash floods: 34 dead, many stranded

Bemunda: Incessant rains continue to batter Uttarakhand for the third day in a row on Monday, triggering landslides, cloudbursts and flash floods. Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna who made an aerial survey of the rains-ravaged areas on Sunday said he would request the Centre for a relief package.

Thousands of homes have been flattened. The death toll has now reached 34. ITBP and police personnel are searching for bodies under the debris. Six people are still missing.

Hundreds of pilgrims on the Chardham yatra have been stranded. The Army has been alerted as well. The government has launched relief and rescue operations and has sent food packets to the affected people.

Nearly, 250 families have already been taken to safer areas.

Meanwhile, there were similar scenes in Jammu and Kashmir. Dozens of homes in Samba, Kathua and Jammu districts have been inundated as the Chenab, Tawi, Ujh and Basantar rivers have been flowing above the danger mark. Over 40 people, who were trapped in flash floods, were rescued on Sunday.

The Indian Air Force was called in to airlift four people who were trapped in the Niki Tawi area. The authorities have sounded an alert in the Jammu region, where intermittent overnight rains caused the rivers to breach their banks.

Those living in low-lying areas have been advised to move to higher grounds.
