Uttarakhand floods: 207 dead, 50,000 still stranded, says government

New Delhi: Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde on Friday said the death toll across Uttarakhand has gone up to 207 and is likely to rise further. He said while 34,000 people have been rescued, 50,000 people are still stranded.

He also said there have been problems in co-ordination. "We could see a problem in co-ordination. We've appointed VK Duggal as the nodal officer. He will be in Dehradun from tomorrow and will coordinate with all the agencies and governments.

Briefing the media about the rescue operations in Uttarakhand, Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari said the IAF has committed 13 more aircraft. "The total number of aircrafts pressed into service is now 43. The IAF is also activating landing grounds at two more places," Tewari said.

The IAF has committed 13 more aircraft and is activating landing grounds at two more places, said Manish Tewari.

"33,192 pilgrims are rescued and moved to a safer place. Search, rescue and relief operations are being carried out by Army, IAF, Private helicopters, SSB, Indo-Tibetan border Police," he said.

Tewari said the government has released an amount of Rs 145 crore from State Disaster Response Fund. LPG supplies are being made and efforts are being made to fulfill the supply of motor spirit.

"With the help of 17 Army and 11 private choppers, 90 sorties were conducted today. Eighteen dead bodies have been recovered," he added.

"The railways are running special trains from Haridwar to carry stranded passengers for free," he said.

The Congress leader said the emergency numbers 100, 101, 108 have become operational now.
