Click to play videoA day after the release of his memoir, My Country, My Life, BJP leader L K Advani spoke at length about his relationship with former prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee. He admitted that Vajpayee's conspicuous absence made all the difference to his star-studded book release function.
Speaking to CNN-IBN Editor-in-Chief Rajdeep Sardesai, Advani said he missed Vajpayee and that they have never been rivals.
Rajdeep Sardesai: Do you feel lonely today that Mr Vajpayee has taken virtual political sanyas?
L K Advani: I did feel that very emotionally and strongly last evening.
Rajdeep Sardesai: You mean when he was not there at the function?
L K Advani: (Yes) And when I met him again this morning and presented him the book. We have never been rivals. I have always respected Vajpayee as my leader ever since I came in contact with him and he also has trusted me as a colleague.
Rajdeep Sardesai: Today you are the prime minister-in-waiting of the NDA, would you still like Mr Vajpayee to contest elections and be there with you?
L K Advani: I would be happy if that happens. I saw him even this morning, and that may be difficult.
Advani also went on to say that Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has the maximum potential to be his successor in the BJP.
L K Advani: We have many potential leaders but I have little doubt that very few of the others have proved their ability in the matter of governance and development as Narendra Modi. Modi has a great potential.
Rajdeep Sardesai: Mr Modi represents an ideology that you believe has a future in this country and therefore the vilification campaign?
L K Advani: He doesn’t have an ideology of his own, the ideology is of the BJP or the RSS and that ideology is one that many of us share, including myself.
