Click to play videoJaipur: The saas-bahu soaps might have ended on TV but in reality a saas-bahu story of another kind has just begun in Rajasthan's political theatre starring Vashundhra Raje as Saasand her convent educated English speaking and of course a Gurjjar bahu Niharika Raje.
Unlike the screen soaps, here the bahu is behaves like a very obedient daughter in law. Niharika's job to woo all Gurjjars who may be a trifle upset with her mother in law.
“I'll take up all your problems before the Maharani Sahib and get them sorted out. I request you to please carry on supporting and strengthening the Maharani Sahib,” says Niharika Raje.
But for Gujjars the Bahu's words are only bitter reminders of the Parivartan Yatra in 2003 when the Chief Minister promised them Scheduled Tribe status. What followed were protests that turned bloody with police firing killing over 70, something the Gujjars cannot wipe out from their memory.
“When the agitation was going on when the people were so aggrieved then if Niharika Ji would have come to us then, shared our grief. Even today when she came the Gujjars were willing to welcome her but by showing political motives in her visit they have not just insulted the Gujjars but also Niharika,” says Ramlal, a resident from Kishangarh.
Last elections Vasundhara Raje's promised the Gujjars ST status against their votes. She's now banking on a family connection to help nurse the wounds of an unkept poll promise gone wrong but once bitten twice shy the Gujjars feel its a little too much to ask.
