Jammu: Hundreds of people in Jammu attended the funeral of businessman Rajneesh Sharma, who died in police custody at Srinagar on October 6 and was allegedly being harassed for marrying a Muslim woman.

Sharma was cremated after the state government assured Jammu residents and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) activists his family would get compensation and his death would be investigated.

Sharma’s wife Aanchal--who was called Anima before she changed her religion--alleged that her parents had bribed police officials to murder her husband because they opposed her marriage.

Police detained Sharma in connection from his brother Pawan Sharma's house in Sarwal, Jammu, on the intervening night of September 29-30.

A police statement in Jammu on Saturday said three policemen have been suspended and a magisterial inquiry ordered into Sharma’s death. He was found hanging in lock up in Srinagar's Ram Munshi Bagh police station.

A second autopsy was conducted on him at the Government Medical College (GMC) Hospital in Jammu after his family alleged that he had been tortured.
