Mumbai: It was an evening to remember for music lovers with a meeting of two musicians who belong to diverse musical traditions – Vanessa Mae, the international violin phenomenon, in concert with sitar legend Ustad Nishat Khan.
Khan started the proceedings with a spellbinding solo performance and Vanessa followed it up with her electrifying solo.
After that it was time for some soul-stirring jugalbandi, which left the audience enthralled and asking for more.
It was Vanessa's first performance in India, but not the first time that she has collaborated with an Indian artiste.
“I have worked with AR Rahman but that was different because he is a composer but to perform with an artist playing the sitar was absolutely great,” Vanessa said.
Vanessa, who picked up the violin at the age of five, shot to fame in her mid-teens, as a breakthrough artist successfully fusing classical music with pop. At 25, she's now been a superstar for almost a decade.
Her Mumbai visit is part of a three-city tour of India, which includes Delhi and Bangalore.
