Deoband: The MBA maulana who dreamt of modernising Darul Uloom Deoband, Ghulam Mohammad Vastanvi was removed as the Vice Chancellor of the university by the seminary's governing council. His removal came after he praised Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's developmental works. The enquiry committee which was set up to probe the charges against him failed to reach a consensus so a trust vote followed, the outcome of which was that the Majlis e Shoora voted 5-8 against Vastanvi.
"I am bidding farewell to Darul Uloom. I told the committee that I will not step down but they can remove me if they deem it fit," Vastanvi said.
Vastanvi's supporters said that they will not take this lying down and will approach the Supreme Court to defend the Vice Chancellor.
"When Vastanvi was given a clean chit, why has he been sacked? We will appeal in the Supreme Court and go by their decision," said one of Vastanvi's supporters.
The decision by the governing council lead to celebrations which broke out in the rival Arshad Madani Camp.
"The shoora has taken a decision... I am no one to comment on it... I am a humble teacher," said Arshad Madani.
Many believe that because he praised Narendra Modi there is no way they will forgive Vastanvi. However, the BJP maintained that many enlightened muslims endorse Modi's achievements in the state.
"I think this is a big slap on the face that more than 40 per cent of the enlightened Muslim leadership endorses the stand and their achievements made by the state," said Gujarat BJP leader Jai Narayan Vyas.
Union Law Minister Salman Khursheed said that it will be inappropriate for the government to pass any comments on the matter as it was an internal matter of the Deoband University.
"What's happening in Deoband is an internal matter, it will be inappropriate for the government to pass any comments," said Khursheed.
More than a fight between individuals, this was a battle between the orthodox old guard against winds of change that there threatening to sweep across the 150-year-old seminary. While Vastanvi may have been forced to leave his exit has split the Deoband community right down the middle.
