VCC, new revolution in phone bus

Hyderabad: You may soon be able to make a call from your cell phone that will move seamlessly between WI-FI and GSM.

Voice call continuity (VCC) enables your cell phone to switch seamlessly between WI-FI and GSM, whichever is available during your call. And all you need is a dual-mode handset equipped with software.

Hyderabad-based Hellosoft, which has developed this software, expects to bring down phone bills anywhere from one-third to one-tenth the cost per minute.

The global demand for the software is estimated to be around $80 billion in the next five years and is linked to growth of dual mode handsets.

"We expect that down the road all high end smart phones will be dual mode. All future phones and home phones will be dual mode in the future. All of them will carry VCC,” says VP-GM, Hellosoft, Rama Rao Sreeramaneni.

The software is all set to be launched next year in Europe, US, Japan and South Korea where voice over Internet protocol is already popular.

So if you have a dual mode handset that's equipped with VCC, it’s crystal clear and easy to use in India.

But be warned because current tria regulations do not permit voice over Internet protocol so half your phone calls in affect will be illegal.

However, Hellosoft is optimistic. It expects to launch in India by 2009. With voice call continuity charges at $2 per handset the company hopes its popularity abroad will prompt authorities in India to review regulations.
