New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati lashed out at the Congress and party chief Sonia Gandhi for the alleged comments made against her by state chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi.
Mayawati said Joshi made “humiliating” statements against her at the behest of the Congress high command.
“The most painful thing is that Sonia Gandhi has remained silent over the issue,” Mayawati said.
"She (Sonia) has neither condemned this humiliating, uncivilised and derogatory statement nor has she taken any action against her at the party level. This clearly shows that the humiliating statement by Joshi was made at the instance of Congress High Command," the UP Chief Minister said at a press conference adding the comments were "not at all pardonable".
She also sought to put Congress in the dock over the SC/ST Act saying the provision of compensation for rape and murder victims of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes was made by the Congress government at the Centre and not the BSP government.
Joshi was arrested after midnight on Wednesday in Ghaziabad for having allegedly made derogatory remarks about Mayawati. Around the same time, her house in Lucknow came under attack from BSP supporters.
Joshi was on Thursday sent to judicial custody for 14 days in Moradabad.
"I have a feeling that the attack has been stage-managed by the Congress party itself with the intent to divert the main issue of Joshi's highly condemnable remarks against me," Mayawati said.
Giving a clean chit to her party workers, she added, "My partymen are well disciplined and there is no question of their involvement in any such act, especially since I had personally told them to hold back their anger against Joshi's remarks. "
The BSP chief also referred to a book by Joshi on her father, late Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna, in which she, according to Mayawati, was critical of the Nehru-Gandhi family.
Displaying a copy of the book, she said, "Simply because Sonia Gandhi chose to condone the objectionable writing by this woman against the Gandhi family, she started thinking no end of herself so much so that now she had the audacity to make obscene remarks against me."
