Caracas, Venezuela: Hundreds of students threw stones in clashes with the police and the Venezuelan National Guard on Wednesday in the capital, Caracas.
The police fired tear gas and used water cannons to disperse the students who were protesting near the Metropolitan University’s campus.
The students were opposing President Hugo Chavez’s planned reforms to the country’s Constitution which, they believe, would give him excessive powers for an indefinite period of time.
Venezuela’s referendum is scheduled for Sunday and according to it, presidential terms can be repeated indefinitely and can last from six to seven years. It would also help establish a socialist state.
Chavez has been a controversial figure not just in the international arena, but even in his own country where opinion about him is sharply polarized.
