Viagra ingredients in ayurvedic medicines

New Delhi: After adulterated foods and drinks, now concerns are being raised about fake ayurvedic medicines and fake Viagra pills.

A pharmacy institute DIPSAR has found that some ayurvedic medicines are adulterated with allopathic salts used in medicine like Viagra.

"We evaluated 16 herbal preparations and found five of them to contain substantial quantity of Sildenafil Citrate and Tadalfil," says Dr S Aggarwal of DIPSAR.

Sildenafil citrate and Tadalafil are the main salts used in drugs to treat erectile dysfunction. Clinical trials have shown that those salts can prove fatal for heart patients who are on nitrate medications.

Ironically, it is the same group of people most likely to rely on the supposed herbal drugs, and with the amount of allopathic salts added far higher than it should be, even in regular medicines this could lead to an overdose, coma and even death.

The medicines are sold over the counter with no mention on the label of these ingredients, which is illegal.

"Ayurvedic medicines have their own way of working and allopathic medicines work differently. Their combination can ruin the body," Dr Preeti Chhabra, an ayurvedic doctor.

Moreover, cosmetics like kajal, lipstick, shampoos, talcum powder and hair colour are adulterated with heavy metals like lead, arsenic, cobalt and nickel. Toothpaste Vicco and Dabur Red were found to be adulterated with tobacco or nicotine, which can lead to cancer.
