Vibrant Gujarat mela: Modi star of the show

Gujarat: Close to 8000 MoUs signed and investments worth Rs 21 lakh crore promised by Indian and global companies and all this in 48 hours.

Gujarat and the man in form Narendra Modi is batting for higher and higher stakes every year at the Vibrant Gujarat mela. More importantly this mela gets him endorsements from people who don't usually endorse in public.

Ratan Tata, chairman, Tata group said, "What made us come to Gujarat was Mr Modi's promise to felicitate land allotment within a few days. Now few days is a difficult thing to swallow in India as often it doesn't happen. In this case, few days became three days."

Mukesh Ambani, chairman, RIL said, "Gujarat is shining like gold today and the credit goes to the visionary and leadership of Narendra Modi. Under your leadership, I have no doubt that Gujarat will be the first state to banish poverty in India."

Zafar Sareshwala, CEO, Parsoli Corporation said, "I've never seen people associating their superstar with a politician. So this is the change. Within non-Muslims he was always a rock star. And that's the case even with Muslims."

But skeptics are asking why an investment mela is needed in a state known to be business friendly.

In 2009 only 34 per cent of the investments pledged were realized. In 2005 only a quarter of the investment pledged were realized.

For Narendra Modi, its been a long journey from being labelled Hindu Hriday Samrat to now emerge as an efficient economic administrator not just for Gujarat, but the entire country.

But the debate between Modi - the Politician and Modi - the Administrator is far from over.
