Victim of fake sting, Uma Khurana can sue TV channel

New Delhi: Delhi-based journalist Prakash Singh who spearheaded a sting operation—claiming to have busted a major prostitution racket—on a private news channel Live India is now facing judicial custody.

While the journalist is facing legal recourse for implicating Delhi school teacher, Uma Khurana in a so-called prostitution racket, the teacher in question is in a position to file for damages.

Uma Khurana can file damages against the channel on whose behalf the sting was carried and also Delhi government that took action against her without even waiting for legal evidence, say lawyers.

“There is a suo moto notice in this case. Uma khurana can become a party to the same petition. She can ask for relief, reinstatement back to the school where she was working. She can move a compensatory order against the Delhi government that dismissed her without any enquiry, compensatory order and order of damages against the channel on whose behalf the reporter was working,” said Meenakshi Lekhi, a lawyer.

Though Khurana will walk free very soon, as the police has said there is no evidence against her, but her reputation may have been tarnished forever.

Uma Khurana a government school teacher at Delhi’s sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya was accused of supplying minor girls to customers.

But soon, the Delhi Police discovered the sting operation was false. Khurana had been trapped and she had to pay a heavy price for it. She was arrested and fired from her job even before an enquiry could be complete.

Live India reporter Prakash Singh is now in judicial custody. And the state government is now facing criticism for jumping the gun. Uma Khurana may not be entirely innocent. But it's now clear that she's become a victim of a news organisation seeking to titillate for ratings and a trigger-happy reaction from the Delhi Government.
