Mumbai: An amateur video of flamingoes being shot near Mumbai has shocked environmentalists in the city.
The gruesome end of the flamingoes flying about at Uran on the outskirts of Mumbai unaware of the danger stalking them was captured by bird watchers Nikhil Bhople and Sandeep Athavale.
"Its shocking that so close to Mumbai there are people who can go around shooting birds in broad daylight,” says Executive Trustee, Conservation Action Trust, Debi Goenka.
Flamingoes are protected under Schedule 4 of the Wildlife Conservation Act and poaching them could mean imprisonment for three years or a fine up to Rs 25,000.
But in spite of video evidence and testimonies of the bird watchers, the police refused to lodge a complaint and allegedly leaked information about the complaint to the poachers.
"A few people came to the boy's house and threatened the family members,” says Forest Minister, Maharashtra, Babanrao Pachpute.
Environmentalists in the city have said that they will settle for no less than maximum punishment for the accused.
Over the years more and more flamingoes have flocked to the Mumbai coastline, but lack of proper enforcement of conservation laws has ensured that few fly back home.
