Bhubaneswar: In a jungle clearing, young boys and girls — some barely out of their teens — are preparing to take on the government's might. Caught on tape also are children in school uniform joining a rally organised by the red brigade.
A video, shot last December somewhere near the Orissa-Chhatisgarh border, was seized from a naxal leader arrested recently in Malkangiri district. It is evidence of a war spreading deep in the minds of the people.
SP Malkangiri, Satish Kumar Gajbhiye says, "These children are used as courier boys, for passing on information about police movements. They are also used for deadly activities like planting land mines and even killing people."
Barely two months after the daring attack at Nayagarh, the video has set alarm bells ringing in Orissa.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who ordered one of the biggest anti-naxal operations of the recent past following the February 15 naxal raid, says more work is needed among villagers being swayed by the Maoist ideology.
"The help of para-military forces will be taken to stop involvement of children in such naxal activities," he stated.
The Orissa DGP has, meanwhile, told CNN-IBN that in villages bordering the Orissa-Chhatisgarh border, each family is forced to send at least one child to the naxal camp — this despite the fact that one of the biggest anti-naxal operation is on in that area.
