New Delhi: The Kanyakumari-Jammu Tawi Express was torched in Jalandhar by violent protesters who were agitating against the killing of a Sikh leader in Austria.
Protests took place across Punjab and Haryana despite Jalandhar, Amritsar, Ludhiana, Hoshiarpur and Phagwara being under curfew.
As violence escalated, police had to open fire on a violent mob at Lambran. Speaking about the incident, DGP Punjab KK Attri said, “We will use force wherever needed. 86 incidences were reported in Punjab. We had to open fire, one person was killed and five were injured.”
Violence spilled onto national highways at Nawanshahr, Hoshiarpur and other places too. In Patiala, followers of Guru Sant Rama Nand, who was killed in Vienna, took to the streets chanting slogans.
Cars and buses were damaged in Amritsar. In Nakodar, thousands came out on streets and pelted stones at the police.
Meanwhile, the Akali Dal-led state government has appealed for peace.
Punjab Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal said, “I appeal to the people of Punjab to maintain peace and order. The incident took place outside India and it had nothing to do with Punjab.”
Over a dozen trains have been diverted from the state following the protests. The Home Ministry said that it is rushing in more paramilitary forces, but alleged the state government is not doing enough.
Home Minister P Chidambaram said, “Our information is that while the curfew is being imposed, it has not been enforced strictly.”
