Panchayat orders couple to stay as siblings

Haryana: A local panchayat in Haryana's Rohtak district has asked a couple to separate and live like siblings. The couple had been married for 3 years and even has a 10-month old son. In fact, the couple had married with the consent of their families. It was only three days ago that some men in their village realised that the couple belonged to two clans - banned from marrying members of each other.

"in ka gotra aglag hai (these two belong to clans which cannot be married)," said Head Village panchayat, Hawa Singh.

"We got married and the whole village came to our marriage. Now, how can I live?," said Kavita.

The panchayat has also asked Satish's father to pay Rs 3 lakh to Kavita and her child.
