Coimbatore: Villagers near Coimbatore have decided to build a memorial for three elephants that were run over and killed by a train in the region.
While the accident has shocked and worried them about an ill omen, other concerns have also been raised, such as increasingly growing threat of development on the wildlife in the area.
Kanneer Anjali is an offering of tears, which is all that the villagers can do for the dead elephants.
A few days ago, three elephants—a pregnant mother and two fully grown males—were killed after they were run over by an empty passenger train.
Nearly 10 days later, people in the area have decided to build a temple in memory of the dead elephants, as villagers say they fear that the death of elephants could cast an evil spell on their village.
"We could not tolerate the sight of this incident. It saddened all of us, and so we decided to build the memorial," a villager Jalaluddin says.
The authorities claim that they are taking appropriate action to avoid similar incidents from taking place in the future.
“Since the last two months the elephants were roaming in the village. We tried to send them back to the forest, but before we could the accident happened. The only solution is for us to work towards saving many such elephants," Member of Forest and Environment Society S Giri says.
