Srinagar: Anger and violence has caught hold of Kashmir. Locals defied curfew and came out on streets to protest against the killing of a Hurriyat leader Sheikh Aziz. Security forces have opened fire and by the end of the day the valley had more bodies to count.

More than 13 people were killed and 100 were wounded in the day-long clashes between the protestors and security forces. The dead bodies also included a cameraperson from a local TV channel, so the media is too caught in the mayhem.

In the Kishtwar region of Jammu, there were more deaths when police opened fired to disperse protestors. A mob retaliated by burning down several houses. However, despite the escalating violence the authorities claim the situation is improving

“Since there was a curfew today, things will slowly limp back to normalcy. There is near to 80 per cent of traffic of essential supplies to Srinagar,” says Principal Home Secretary Jammu and Kashmir Anil Goswami.

Meanwhile, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti urged the Prime Minister to take a decision on the Amarnath land row taking into account the aspirations of both regions.

“I appeal to the Prime Minister that whatever decision is taken in New Delhi, it should involve civil society from Kashmir like traders, shopkeepers, bar association. No decision should be taken unilaterally. That is my request,” says Mufti.

For the first time in 13 years the entire valley is placed under curfew and there is no clue how the authorities will control this situation.
