Violence-hit Jammu shutdown for 5 more days

New Delhi: Violence-hit Jammu continued to be tense against the cancellation of land allotment to the Sri Amarnmath Shrine Board (SASB) on Tuesday.

Violent protests erupted in Maisuma, Nowhatta, Rajouri kadal and Gojara areas of Srinagar over the killing of a youth, one of the two people who died in the violence, on Monday.

The two people were killed and 30 injured in police firing in Samba town in the Jammu region. The state government has ordered a magisterial probe into the police firing in Samba district.

The Amarnath Sangrash Samiti, an amalgam of 35 outfits, have extended the shutdown in Jammu by another five days in wake of the killings and there is a complete bandh in Srinagar.

The Centre has rushed two top bureaucrats, Union Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta and Defence Secretary Vijay Singh, to Jammu and Kashmire to assess the situation. The will be meeting state government officials at 1100 hrs IST. The Governor will preside over the meeting.

The decision to send two top officials came after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh met with Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil at his residence upon his return from the SAARC summit in Colombo.

Meanwhile, Patil also convened a meeting at his residence on Monday during to review the situation in the sensitive state, which is currently under Governor's rule. Steps being taken by local authorities to control violence figured in the meeting, which also decided to provide all assistance required by the state government.

The PM is also holding an all-party meeting in New Delhi on Tuesday to find out ways to resolve the crisis.

Protesters in Jammu have been agitating for the past over one month for the restoration of 40 hectares of forest land in north Kashmir to the SASB that was given to the shrine board on May 26 and then withdrawn July 1.

The agitation had affected traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar highway but more than 600 trucks of commodity supplies reached the Kashmir Valley as the security forces guarded the highway.

The government on Sunday lifted the ban on two Jammu-based TV channels following an agreement with their managements. Authorities had earlier sealed the premises of the two TV channels, Take 1 and JK Channel, saying they were broadcasting "provocative material" that "incited passions of people".
