New Delhi: There is a controversy brewing over the 2013 Padma awards. An RTI application filed reveals that VIPs nominated family members and colleagues in sheer disregard to conflict of interest.
The RTI reveals that some recommended as many as 25 nominees for the Padma awards. Congress treasurer Motilal Vora, Congress MP T Subbarami Reddy and Hindustani classical vocalist Pandit Jasraj have recommended over a dozen names.
Singing legend Lata Mangeshkar nominated her sister Usha for the awards, while Sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan nominated his sons Amaan and Ayaan Ali Bangash.
Also, rebel SP leader Amar Singh named his confidante and Rajya Sabha member Jaya Prada for this year's highest civilian honours.
The Home Ministry received 1,300 nominations and the awards were given away in April.
