Spain's Hanging Bridge joins heritage list

New Delhi: UNESCO has declared Spain’s Hanging Bridge as a World Heritage Site on Thursday.
The Vizcaya Bridge was the world's first to carry both people and traffic on a suspended gondola. It is the only one of its type still in use today.
It was built in 1898 and is described as a perfect combination of functionality, aesthetic beauty and technical creativity by the World Heritage Committee.
A German medieval city, a mining town in Chile and archaeological sites in Iran and China were among the other nine sites added to UNESCO's World Heritage List on Thursday.
The World Heritage Committee, which is holding a weeklong conference in the Lithuanian capital, also added sites from Italy, Oman, Poland, Syria and Britain to its prestigious list.
The historic Old Town of Regensburg, Germany, dates back to a Roman camp from 176 AD, and functions as an excellent archaeological example of a medieval town, the committee said.
The Bisotun complex in Iran, located along ancient Persian trading routes, features remnants dating back more than 2,500 years, while the Chinese archaeological site of Yin Xu is an ancient capital city of the Shang Dynasty, UNESCO said.
The Sewell Mining Town in Chile was built in the early 20th century and was hailed by the committee as an ''outstanding example of the company towns that were born in many remote parts of the world from the fusion of local labor and resources from an industrialized nation.''
Other sites included on the list were the Strade Nuove and the system of the Palazzi dei Rolli in Italy's Genoa historic center; the ancient ''aflaj'' irrigation system in Oman; the Centennial Hall in Wroclaw, Poland; the two castles Crac des Chevaliers and Qalat Salah El-Din in Syria, and Britain's Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape.
The World Heritage List includes more than 800 places around the world identified by UNESCO as having ''outstanding universal value.''
