Vodafone Essar cuts roaming charges

Mumbai: Third-ranked Indian mobile operator Vodafone Essar has cut charges on calls made outside a user's local coverage area, the latest step in an intense price war in the world's fastest-growing wireless market.

Under the plans announced on Friday, users can choose roaming charges of either 70 paisa per minute or 1.5 paisa per second.

Mobile operators such as Bharti Airtel and Reliance Communications are locked are locked in a tariff war, raising concerns about telecom firms' profitability.

The price war is aimed at grabbing new users as new firms enter the market.

Norway's Telenor launched services on Thursday, becoming the 12th operator in India.

Etisalat, the Arab world's second-biggest carrier, is among players planning to enter the market.
