Bangalore: Voting has begun for in Bangalore civic polls that are being held today.
I'ts a big day for the city as it would be voting for a new civic body. The BJP, Congress and JD-S are in the race for control of one of the richest civic bodies in the country.
An estimated 70 lakh citizens of Bangalore will decide the fate of 1342 candidates in 198 wards in the city. The three main political parties that is the BJP, Congress and the JD-S have pulled out every trick in the book to woo the voter to get control of one of the richest civic bodies in the country.
For the Congress party, the main campaigner was the former chief minister and External Affairs Minister SM Krishna who reminded Bangalore that it was his party which put the city on the world map thanks to their aggressive policies of wooing major IT and BT companies.
"I wanted the Bangalore Development Authority to play a stellar role in wooing IT and BT companies and thus Bangalore again became the centre of attraction... It became the hub especially for Information Technology," Krishna said.
However, the ruling BJP government was quick to reply.
"After what ever he trumpets about his achievements in Bangalore, his government was voted out of Bangalore and Karnataka and BJP for the first time became the single largest party in 2004," BJP leader Ananth Kumar said.
Even as political parties battle it out against each other the big question is will the voter come out and cast his verdict? The city saw very low polling turnout during the Lok Sabha and the assembly elections.
People like Captain Gopinath, MD, Deccan Express Logistics are urging people to exercise their franchise.
"First thing I'm telling you is that everyone must vote. By not voting, you're giving the right for somebody else to decide your future. If you want your future to be decided, you must participate in that future and the first step in democracy is to vote."
