New Delhi: The agonising wait for the Uphaar verdict continues. The case was scheduled to be heard in the Patiala House court on Wednesday but the hearing was adjourned till October 22.
Industrialists Ansals, accused in the case, said CBI counsel Harish Salve had given some submissions which they (Ansals) didn’t get a chance to rebut. This could be a reason for adjournment.
Adjournment on silly grounds is a tactic that most defence lawyers adopt so the case is adjourned and prosecution gets demoralised. Now the judge will pronounce final date of verdict on October 22.
Fifty nine people lost their lives in the fire that broke out at Uphaar Cinema because of a faulty transformer. The Association of Victims of Uphaar Tragedy had lodged an FIR alleging death due to negligence against Gopal and Sushil Ansal, the owners of the film hall.
Incidentally, four out of 12 accused in the case are dead. Even the main accused R M Puri - the manager of Uphaar cinema - is dead, hence destroying the most crucial bit of evidence.
This assumes significance as the Ansals seem to be deflecting the blame on Puri who can't come to his defence now.
The court says it will decide the date of pronouncement of verdict on October 22 as it has not gone through the complete case file. The court rejects plea of theatre owners, Sushil and Gopal Ansal, to file additional arguments, claiming their innocence in the case.
