Mumbai: Twenty people were killed and five others injured when a wall, which was part of the Bhalla Complex that comprises warehouses and storages, fell on them in Navi Mumbai on Saturday.
Those killed are labourers and were constructing the wall in Kuthari village near Taloja when it fell at around 1315 hours IST. Rescue workers on the site say that the death toll may rise as the number of people in the complex was 28.
The rescue operations have concluded and the debris is now being cleared. The complex’s owner has been arrested and are being questioned.
The injured have been taken to the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Vashi and Panvel. "At least two more bodies maybe trapped in the debris," Navi Mumbai police commissioner Ramrao Wagh told PTI.
"The construction labourers hail from Vidarbha's Buldhana district," said Wagh. The commissioner claimed Taloja has many new warehouses whose owners save on taxes by staying out of Navi Mumbai municipal limits and benefit by being near urban markets.
