Madurai: A brick wall that separated Dalits and colonies of the Pillaimars or the upper castes in Uthapuram village in Madurai has finally been brought down. The 600-meter long and 10-meter high brick wall was built in 1989.
The wall was broken after the local Communist leader threatened to break it if authorities failed to resolve the issue.
The reason behind the prompt action is Communist party of India -Marxist (CPI-M) General Secretary Prakash Karat's scheduled visit to the village on May 7.
Dalits were also denied access to basic common resources and had separate water taps, community halls, crematoriums and even temples.
CNN-IBN had first reported about the wall on May 4 that separated Dalits from higher casts in Uthapuram
Madurai District Collector SS Jawahar confirmed that the wall has been brought down.
"What we found is that one group said it is a protective wall but the other group said it is a discriminatory wall. So went into the two aspects. The area where it was used a discrimination wall has been removed. The situation was simmering recently and they wanted the administration to act. We immediately sprung into action. The other group is naturally unhappy but we will pacify them also> all the groups should live in amity and harmony," Jawahar said.
