Hyderabad: In what is being seen as another fallout of the Hyderabad blasts, it's become difficult to acquire a driving license in the city. The government has introduced minimum educational qualification and a nationality check for all who apply for a new license.
And the Andhra Pradesh government is jubilant for it is the first in the country to have implemented education and nationality checks as a pre-requisites to obtain a driving license.
You now have to undergo a nationality check and be educated till at least Class VIII, if you want a driving license for a motor vehicle.
Says Joint Commissioner, Traffic, CLN Gandhi, "This is because lately, a lot of foreigners have been doing anti-national activities in the city. But now, suppose a person from Bangladesh wants a driving license in Hyderabad, only his visa won't do, we need to check the authority on which he is here."
But the new rules apply only to commercial vehicles like trucks, buses and autos. So an illegal immigrant in Hyderabad can still get a two-wheeler or car license with ease.
However, it's only a matter of time before the rules are changed for cars and two-wheelers as well.
But not all people are happy with the clampdown. Some people say that they are not educated but are working as drivers and wonder as to what will happen to them if they do not get licenses.
The new rule applies only to those who are applying for a new license. And so, all existing license holders can breathe free. While it might take some time to ensure that the system is fool-proof, it's still a good start.
