Want to build contacts? Go online

Narendra Nag, CNN-IBN

New Delhi: Being online has become synonymous with connecting with news, ideas, opportunities, and people. Consider the numbers: Nearly 1.2 billion people use Internet and over a 100 million of them use social networking web sites.

While 55 per cent of the teens have a personal profile on the web, 48 per cent of them visit social networking websites at least once in a day.

Social networking isn't only about Orkut. There are plenty of other websites that offer business connections, career-related information, music and what not. Business networking site linkedin.com is for serious professional. The site promises to help you network for your career. Techtribe is a site especially designed for techies. It promises money for people with good ideas.

The homegrown dostpost.com is giving away money to students. It is one website that sees IITians as their target audience. The biggest of them all is myspace.com that revolves around music lovers across the world.

As the world grows more and more congested, there is lesser room for ideas. It seems little surprising that we go online to find enough space for all our ideas and likes-dislikes.
