New Delhi: Assistant Commissioner Police Rajbir Singh was shot dead by property dealer Vijay Bhardwaj on March 24 in Gurgaon at about 2030 hrs IST.
Bhardwaj is now in police custody but was the killing of encounter specialist Rajbir Singh an inside job?
Sources tell CNN-IBN that Bhardwaj made many phone calls before he finally surrendered nearly three hours later at 2330 hrs IST after calling Assistant Sub Inspector, Gurgaon Police, Pradeep Dagar and confessing to the killing.
And in a startling revelation, two of numbers are VIP numbers allotted to Crime Branch officers of Delhi Police.
So what exactly happened in those three hours?
Police sources told a CNN-IBN Special Investigation Team that before Bhardwaj surrendered, he made 28 outgoing calls and received 24 incoming calls on his number.
The first call after shooting Rajbir Singh was made at 2120 hrs IST and the last call was logged at 2330 hrs IST just before he surrendered.
Bhardwaj made calls to his advocate and to his brother Sanjay. He also made 14 calls to three VIP numbers.
Police sources tell CNN-IBN that two numbers have been allotted to Delhi police Crime Branch officers, a team Rajbir Singh himself belonged to.
According to sources, another well-known Delhi police encounter specialist uses one of the numbers.
He was a person who was the right hand man and close confidante of Rajbir Singh when he was in the Delhi police special cell.
The third number was originally registered to the Crime Branch, but surrendered a few months ago.
CNN IBN's Special Investigation Team confronted Bhardwaj with the information when he was produced in court.
In reply, the Gurgaon Police assaulted the reporter and whisked Bhardwaj away from the court.
CNN-IBN has also learnt that two Delhi Police Crime Branch officers met Bhardwaj at around 1400 hrs IST in his office about seven hours before Rajbir Singh was killed.
Bhardwaj's phone calls are being traced and investigated. Perhaps that will make clear some of the many unanswered questions of encounter specialist Rajbir Singh's murder.
