Chennai: Tamil Nadu Health Minister MRK Paneerselvam, who watched a police officer bleed to death, defended himself saying he was too shaken to get out his car and so did his duty by just calling for an ambulance.
"It was only the idea of giving him the right medical treatment that delayed it a bit. It's not true that I did not get out of the car to help the police officer. I am not inhuman. How can one not get out after seeing the condition for that person?" said Paneerselvam about Tamil Nadu police sub inspector R Vetrivel, who was bleeding to death on a highway after being attacked by gangsters.
"I got down with the mobile and the first thing that I did was to call the ambulance and when we realised that it was going to be delayed we took him in one of our cars to the hospital," he said.
However, an eyewitness said that the minister did not offer any help to the dying police officer.
"He (the police officer) pleaded for help for more than half an hour. A minister was also there at the spot but no one offered to help," claimed an eyewitness.
Minister for Environment, Youth Welfare and Sports TPM Moideen Khan who along with Paneerselvam was passing by in a cavalcade where Vetrivel was lying injured also defended his action.
"We are being wrongly accused. We immediately called the ambulance," said Khan.
Vetrivel bled to death after being attacked by a gang in Tirunelveli district even as Panneerselvam and Khan who were passing by in their cavalcade allegedly failed to save him.
Police said 44-year-old Vetrivel was a victim of mistaken identity and the assailants were after another police officer.
The gang threw crude bombs at Vetrivel, severely injuring his right leg.
Vetrivel was then attacked with sickles, suffering deep injuries on his neck and head.
The police officer died as the two ministers and police officials waited for the ambulance to arrive.
