Mumbai: Diamonds worth Rs 10 crore that were stolen in Mumbai last Tuesday have been recovered. The thief, Santosh Gaikwad, was caught on CCTV camera taking them out of the Arshit Gems store.
While Gaikwad, an employee at the diamond import and export shop got his plan bang on, little did he realise he was being watched by the cameras that would do him in.
But how did Gaikwad manage the robbery? He hid inside the shop when it was time to down the shutters and spent half the night locked inside.
"Later, he climbed out of the window, walked along the ledge and came out onto the stairs. That's where he was caught on camera,” says WDCP, Zone 2, Ramrao Pawar.
He is captured on cameras on the night of October 16, doing a recce, looking round the corridors to see if he's being watched and going up to the shop to execute his plan.
He is shown coming down with a bag in hand and another slung across his shoulder, possibly containing the stolen diamonds. It's this footage that led the police straight to Santosh.
Four other people, including two women, have also been arrested in the case. The men worked with different traders in the same building, while the women helped Santosh hide the booty.
This case is one among the series of high-value jewelery thefts in the city and is the second to be solved by the Mumbai police in record time. The earlier case at the city's international airport's cargo hold was cracked in two days.
