Drinking in public places can prove costly

New Delhi: The festive season is on but for all those who are planning to grab some glasses of liquor there are both good and bad news.

Though Delhi government has cleared sale of alcohol in malls and community centers, drinking on roads and public places can prove really costly for the consumers.

“We want to prevent unruliness in the view of Commonwealth Games 2010. We want to maintain law and order situation in the city,” says Delhi Finance Minister AK Walia.

A new excise bill makes drinking publicly a non-bailable offence.

So, those who would be found drinking in cars, on roads, outside eateries and other public places should be ready to shell out Rs 5,000.

Those who would be caught creating public nuisance after getting drunk would be reportedly fined up to Rs 10,000 and even sent to jail for three months.

Moreover, any establishment serving liquor to a gathering without a valid licence could be fined up to Rs 50,000 and the owner could be jailed for up to six months.
