Derbyshire (England): A CCTV expert has provided a water buffalo named Oink with its own surveillance camera system after hearing it had been attacked by thugs.

"Once I'd heard in the local news about the abuse that Oink was getting from locals I was just absolutely sickened," said David Lakin.

Thugs threw bricks at the 15-year old buffalo and set his hay on fire, according to his owner Katherine Moore. "Oink began to fear venturing out of his shed in a field in Derby," she said.

But news reports of Oink's plight prompted offers of support to come flooding in -- including Lakin's proposal to install a CCTV system to deter thugs.

"I'd got some CCTV equipment in the garage that I was not using myself so I thought I'm going to donate it to a good cause and help protect him."

Lakin installed several surveillance cameras and a security light, while a nearby business monitors the CCTV images.

He said families came from miles around to visit the one-and-a-half tonne animal, which lives in a field in Derby.

"Everybody just loves him and whatever we can do to help him out is going to be the best thing."
