Bhopal: The Gambhir water reservoir of Ujjain with a storing capacity of 2,250 million cubic feet has dried up entirely by the month of December.
To resolve the acute drinking water crisis, the city municipal corporation has taken up a project to get water from Amla Vida Dam, about 24 kilometer from the city. The civic body has also availed a loan amount of Rs 12 crore for the purpose.
“We had written to the government, they have sanctioned a loan of Rs 12 crore and water will be transported to the city till this new project is implemented,” Collector of Ujjain Mukesh Shukla said.
The entire Malwa region and almost the whole of western Madhya Pradesh is reeling under acute water shortage. Even the state capital is not spared. Experts put the blame on the reversal of monsoon trends this year.
“The rainfall this year was much lower than the average in western Madhya Pradesh. On the contrary regions that had low rainfall had excessive rainfall,” Director of Met Department Bhopal DP Dubey said.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh Shivraj Singh Chauhan confirmed, “There is a crisis of drinking water. We have already had a meeting on it.”
The promises made by the state government offer a solution, but schemes that were sanctioned in 2004 have still not been completed.
