Mumbai: A huge water pipe came crashing down on a running train in northeast Mumbai on Friday morning, killing the driver and a commuter. Twelve others were also injured in the accident.

The pipeline collapsed along with a bridge being built to support it at a stretch between Mulund and Thane, said officials of the Central Railway and Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM).

The train driver, identified as R Ramachandran, died after being trapped inside the engine compartment for several hours. The other casualty was a commuter, a Central Railway spokesperson said.

A rescue and relief team of the railways and MCGM fire brigade is engaged in clearing the debris from the railway tracks. The authorities have also closed the water supply from the pipeline till normalcy is restored.

The Central Railways suspended all suburban services on all the lines till the tracks are cleared. Long distance train services on the Pune and Kolkata and Chennai sectors have also been hit.

With a view to clearing the rush of thousands of commuters, the Thane Municipal Corporation, Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation and the Bombay Electric Supply & Transport have deployed extra buses.
