Mumbai: Mumbai is heading for its much awaited municipal polls but a recent survey by AC Nielson, commissioned by CNN-IBN's sister channel IBN7, has thrown up some startling revelations about what Mumbaikars think about the city.
Like a resident of Mumbai, M V Balakrishnan complains that his tap leaks worms instead of water. He says that the muck comes in through the tap flooding his bathroom.
“Live worms come in with the water. It is filthy. The water is contaminated due to slum encroachment. I have complained but no steps have been taken,” Balakrishnan says.
Which is why Balakrishnan’s wife Prasanna has to take special care to make the water drinkable. She boils the water with herbs they have had to bring in especially from Kerala, their native place.
And as if all that effort for safe water wasn't enough when Balakrishnan adds that another problem irking them nowadays is water shortage.
Balakrishnan has made his point and now there's more proof to show for the rising problems of Mumbaikars. In the AC Nielson survey the findings are crystal clear:
- Twenty-nine per cent of the respondents said water supply is the biggest problem facing Mumbaikars.
- Twenty-seven per cent cited drainage and garbage as the next big menace.
- Not far behind were bad roads and traffic at 17 per cent among other factors.
Though a lot has changed since the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation connected new pipelines to augment water supply by 5 per cent in the city, the fear of having to live in the perpetual wait for water continues.
